DIY Tips from Neighbor and SPOA Board Member, Brantley Malone:
If you want to keep your mailbox looking great and avoid spending $535 on a new one, here are some handy DIY tips to help maintain it:
1. Remove and Clean the Signs:Unscrew the signs from your mailbox to clean and paint them.
2. Wash the Mailbox and Signs: Use a bucket, rag, soft brush, and water for a quick 15-minute wash.
3. Prevent Birds from Perching: Add a long outdoor nail to the top of your post to discourage birds from perching and making a mess.
4. Prime Bare Wood and Nails:Apply Primer or Kilz to any exposed wood or nails.
5. Use PVC Molding: Add PVC molding around the top box/post instead of caulk, as caulk may not hold up over time and can allow water to leak in and cause rot.
6. Seal Cracks: Use white paintable outdoor caulk to fill in any cracks around the post, shell, or molding—anywhere water might seep in.
7. Apply Two Coats of Outdoor Paint: Apply two coats of outdoor paint, allowing 1-2 hours to dry between coats. A small roller works great, and each coat only takes about 20 minutes to apply.
8. Reattach the Signs: Once the paint dries for a couple of hours, screw the cleaned signs back on.
Taking a few simple steps now can save you money in the long run and keep our neighborhood looking fantastic!
